Guernsey Literary Society and Potato Peel Pie Review

Not Guernsey!
I declare a vested interest as I am a Guernseyman who has lived hither all my life. The picture show is very entertaining, well acted and interesting. I recommend information technology equally a beloved story with a Guernsey historic background that is reasonably authentic. Sadly the motion-picture show was not shot in Guernsey for various reasons and although the scenery is lovely to look at it's not as beautiful equally our Isle. Come and visit Guernsey and enjoy our Island.

A nicely baked pie that isn't cooked all the way through but has enough filling to brand it edible
Saw 'The Guernsey Literary and Potato Pare Pie Society' as a fan of period drama, as someone who is trying to watch as many films of the year equally possible and who likes a lot of the actors in the cast. It's great plenty seeing such talent on their ain, and even more than of a delight to take and then much talent together.
The thought for the story was also very interesting and it was nice to run into a film based in a fairly under-explored period of wartime history. The championship was not hugely appetising though. Seeing the film with my sister yesterday, institute 'The Guernsey Literary and Potato Pare Pie Social club' to be a pleasant and well washed if falling short of great motion-picture show. It is engrossing plenty and should take enough to entreatment to a reasonable sized audience, information technology may appeal more than to older audiences simply those who want to know more about this period of wartime history or desire to gain some knowledge of it should get something out of it.
Non a perfect film by all means. Volition admit to having a good thought of, well actually knowing, how 'The Guernsey Literary and Spud Peel Pie Club' was going to finish well before information technology concluded, with the love-related aspect of the story being telegraphed a fiddling besides early.
Didn't treat the character of Mark. Fifty-fifty better are the cast, with Lily James a mannerly and very rootable lead and Michiel Huisman cut a handsome presence. Their chemistry is warm and tender. Tom Courtenay is understated and amusing, having one of the flick's best lines near the end, while Penelope Wilton as the near rounded supporting character is heart-wrenching. Jessica Brownish Findley is also strong.
Mike Newell does solidly directing, not exceptional but he skilfully stops 'The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Order' from existence too frothy or too intense. The script is thought-provoking, with some tension and a lot of emotion. The cease credits were a lovely touch. A practiced chore is done showing what living in the flow and before was similar while non being likewise i-sided. There is genuine emotional ability hither, with a dorsum-story and main conflict, centring around the consequences of significant loss, that provides a lot of poignancy and hope.

This movie is all Class, the storyline is a sincere work of art , this forgotten isle is the story of courage of the people who lived at that place throuought the war years , Lily James gives an Oscar operation. The best movie for a long while.

English charm
This film adaptation of a pop novel may be a mouthful of a title, yet the film is fabricated with eye and soul and its very entertaining. It is a sweet, well-shot and well-acted nostalgic post-war drama. Lily James does well equally she can with her rather unlikely grapheme, the supporting bandage are solid and the script is good as well. Fans of old-fashioned romances need look no further. The thoroughly delightful cast, the handsome catamenia blueprint make also a good enough picture but the flick is directed by Mike Newell, who made one of the greatest romantic movies, "4 Weddings and a Funeral" so nosotros expected even more. The issue is a flick that, while perfectly enjoyable with its English charm, becomes a nostalgic and superficial equally the championship suggests it is going to exist.

This is my ultimate comfort movie for the dark times.

I loved this so much with every fiber in my beingness. I simply finished the book earlier this month and finally sat down to lookout the movie. It was so beautiful and absolutely perfect. The characters all felt like family and the story kept me on the edge of my seat, only like the book did. I strongly recommend this because it is such a good story and feels like a warm hug. Dawsey owns my heart and Marking can leave.

wait! no superheroes? no large action scenes? Laissez passer!
Kidding, this was truly such a hidden gem, someone recommended i watch it and i did, at present i tin't be more than grateful. It's ane of those films you discover yourself still thinking nigh days after watching, i observe myself tearing upwards a couple of times throughout the picture, which is something i haven't washed this entire year. Filled with charming and lovable characters, shot in a beutiful island with cute scenery, heartwarming story virtually dearest, family and friendship, now i find myself tempted to read the novel just to spend more time with those characters, i feel like a mini serial formula would have been meliorate for this adoptation of the novel though, rather than a 2 hours film which leaves you lot simply wanting more. Anyway, i highly recommend this if you are tired of all the blockbuster movies like me and merely want a simple low-cal hearted moving-picture show to enjoy.

Be warned this film contains acting!
I was intrigued past the title so thought give it a go. disappointingly in that location were no special effects, explosions or alien monsters only a elementary story relayed to u.s. by actors of all things,considering of all this it will not authorize for any awards other than my ain lowly stance. I laughed I cried, became angry and gave it the accolade of the best film I have seen for a long time, whatever tosh other people may say about this tale I enjoyed it, and so lets accept some more films with a story to tell without the bangs and bloodbaths

Admittedly charming
Watched this on Netflix, primarily for the keen cast. A beautiful movie about dearest and backbone. A great script and the acting is superb. This is a hidden gem. A must watch.

Simply cute
23 Apr 2018 The Second Film of Choice at The Plaza Dorchester Tonight - The Guernsey Literary and Irish potato Skin Pie Society. This is a gripping story of one group of people on the Channel Island of Guernsey during the High german occupation of world war two. Sympathetically told, this story shares the horrors that this Island of people went through and how their compassion could lead to their downfall. Bringing together some wonderful actors, the film is set in 1946 with flashbacks to the war years. A author called Juliet Ashton is fatigued to the island by the chance encounter of a farmer and a book that once belonged to her. What follows is a tale of her struggle to discover their stories and the dilemma that faces her on whether to publish their very individual experiences or not. It is as well a story of love, and of survival. Beautifully shot with scenery well matched to the emotion, this pic is a joy to watch. I oasis't read the book yet simply I can't await to start.

I'm so glad I plant this
Information technology isn't frequently that I go to spend time with characters that I intendance about, in stories that both motion me and make me laugh, gear up in places that I have never visited earlier but wish, when the lights come up, that I had more time to spend there.
I never read the book. I happened upon this by accident and decided to give it a few minutes and see if it was worth watching later when I came home from dinner with friends. I never got to that dinner.

Faultless instance of how to make a good motion-picture show.
Perhaps the best film I've seen this year. Lily James is not only a charismatic presence on the screen, she has both an outward and inner beauty that currently is difficult to match. Based on a best selling novel, this moving picture has not only top notch interim right downwardly to a four year old girl but wonderful dialogue, an intriguing story of some mystery, beautiful scenery and tight direction without whatever excess shots. Without giving anything away I felt myself willing Ms James to do the right matter and what a convincing actress she's turned out to be afterward showtime entrancing us walking down that staircase in Downton Abbey if you saw that. As a footnote, await out for at least three other actors from Downton. I loved this pic and rarely give 10 stars.

To facilitate blithesome tears, manager Mike Newell, who made his proper name with Iv Weddings and a Funeral, casts the unequalled Lily James as writer Juliet Ashton in post-war London; her success at crafting romantic tales and biographies (Ann Bronte, no less) brings her to Guernsey, one of the Channel Islands occupied in WWII past Nazis because, although a self-governing dependency of the British crown, it is closer to Europe than England. She is open to the society'due south tale of survival under Germany's thumb and to the thrill of writing Guernsey's tale of liberation.
One tension comes from her connectedness with three men, each love completely different, bringing her to fulfillment in sometimes heartbreaking means. The story's glory is the depth of her feeling and the challenges to express her beloved in ways that do not hurt but edify. Add to that a detective story that subtly weaves a motif of gender equality.
Conflicts arise, and not just with the Nazis, although the imprisonment of a whole population past evil occupiers begs a comparison with our global pandemic, whose ruthless appropriation of our freedom promises to occupy longer than Nazis ever could. However, a author and soul like Juliet inevitably can free a population and herself.
Filmed on the coasts of Guernsey, Cornwall, and Devon, Guernsey Literary has all a lover of the romantic story and smashing cinematography could desire. Very deliberately paced and lovely to watch.
The story begins in London in 1946. Now that the war is over, Juliet Ashton is a best-selling writer and she should be happy now that she'due south become engaged to a rich and handsome American soldier. But she seems a scrap lost despite her success. One matter that piques her interest is a alphabetic character she'south received from Guernsey (one of the Channel Islands off the coast of France). Information technology's from a man who is looking for a book and who is role of the The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society...a book club consisting of nearly a one-half dozen members. Instead of just sending the human being the volume, she decides to get to Guernsey and run into this volume club. Yet, although they loved hosting her, at that place is some sort of cloak-and-dagger about this group...a clandestine that Juliet is determined to discover out for herself.
The biggest praise in this moving picture probably goes to the director, equally the story is simple merely Mike Newell manages to brand the near of information technology. It's a well written story, and beautifullly shot, an emotional moving motion picture. A beloved story is the sub plot , to the main plot of nazi occupied aqueduct island ..unrequited love , honey found on a journey to discover the truth of what really happened during the occupation in WW2 . A good motion picture . More but a love story .

Decent mindless fun
The movie starts off great, it actually sucks you lot in right at the offset and even manages to go the emotions flowing as you experience for the characters and the circumstances you detect them in. The plot does really well until well-nigh one-half way through the movie and and then it starts to muddle around and the pace slows downwards significantly and thus my emotional zipper to the characters. At the finish of the twenty-four hours it is withal a good film, simply wish it was trimmed a bit and maybe remove near 15 minutes so it flows a bit better. The main love story is also about as cliche as it can perchance get, only I suppose that is somewhat expected with this genre.

The Guernsey Literary and Murphy Skin Pie Club

It is non often that a beloved novel tin can be adjusted and so originally and nonetheless so faithfully. A unique and rather wonderful experience.
Juliet Ashton (Lily James) struggles under the trauma and horror of Postal service-Globe-War-Ii London until a letter puts her into contact with Dawsey Adams (Michiel Huisman;) a member of the Guernsey Literary and Murphy Pare Pie Order. Soon enough, she finds herself visiting the island and hearing the stories of comfort, dear, horror and pure resilience from Guernsey'southward eccentric inhabitants.
Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows' novel, on which this is based, brought to life one of many untold stories from the War. That story being the NAZI occupation of the English Isles. Writing in the form of letters, it is easy to see how the novel became a personal exploration of the ability of storytelling. Indeed, the literary society is a group of friends using reading and friendship equally a means of escaping their war-torn situation. Newell is very aware of these powerful themes and works wonders to bring them to the screen.
Much of the film is made up of Guernsey's characters recounting their stories to Juliet, accommodated past flashbacks. There is no minimum of truth poured into these tales to brand them relevant and rather confronting. What ties them all together is the resilience of their friendship through these harsh times and what this raw bravery truly achieved.
Beside these recollections is an old-fashioned love and hope story. Juliet is quick to autumn for the island of Guernsey and the friends she finds in that location. At a fourth dimension when the people of Guernsey needed new love and support, she provides it with flair. In many ways, this is a story of finding promise out of trauma and love when you have zero else left.
Even the cinematography of the film resembles these morals. London is grey on the outside and artificially coloured in any delights in presents. Guernsey on the other manus, is presented with rolling mountains and mighty waves crashing against the shore. Wise, witty, against and all the same total of heart, The Guernsey Literary and White potato Pare Pie Guild is a real and wonderful story. The only alarm that must be advised to viewers: apparently potato peel pie is non as delightful as the film. Avert consumption!

Cute Adaptation of the book!
I loved this motion-picture show!! Having read the book and information technology being one of my all fourth dimension favourite books I was a little wary of the moving-picture show, as they frequently don't practise the book justice. Nonetheless, this is an exception! I idea information technology was beautifully made and the casting was brilliant with great chemistry between them. The but thing that did let it downwards was one of, what I felt, was a larger plot from the book being left out. It would have made it complete to have the catastrophe and how the catastrophe happened stayed more true to book, but it was however a beautiful ending and would highly recommend to anyone!

I loved this motion-picture show. It has a peachy cast and a very interesting storyline. It was a good mixture of romance, history, friendships and how our life experiences shape us. I would thoroughly recommend this pic.

A London writer forms a bond with the members of a book order on the island of Guernsey
British and French troops fighting Nazi Germany suffer a stunning defeat in May 1940 on mainland Europe. Germany invades the Channel Islands, livestock is impounded and a nighttime curfew imposed.

Overly sentimental and predictable romance
I watched this mistakenly thinking it was going to be a historical drama, and boy was I wrong.
Rich city girl that has it all, including a sophisticated fianée and a gay best friend goes away to spend a few days with simpler folk in the country side where she meets the true dear of her life.
Does that story sound familiar? Certain it does, it'south the plot of a dime a dozen romance movies and this 1's non really any difference. Any historical drama is served up purely in the interest of furthering the romance plot and non a single thing comes as a surprise in this overly sentimental movie that is 100% predictable from outset to finish.

Information technology's not very often these days where you watch a film and you lot are just left feeling thoroughly in awe at the end of it.
The credits rolled and I merely sat there in silence, immobile for a further 10 minutes taking in the infrequent piece of flick making I had just witnessed.
It amazes me that a movie of this calibre passed by virtually unnoticed. Should you pit it against similar movies with similar themes, it'southward every bit every bit good if non meliorate.
I guess in this twenty-four hours and age, existence given a steady diet of superhero dross and CGI blockbusters, a simple film with an expert cast that relies solely on a practiced story and the expertise and interim talents of the people involved to put it over, would seem alien to some, but for me it was a well crafted harkback to how films used to be made and indeed how they should nonetheless be made today if anybody had any sense.

Plus we are presented with a conventional and touching dear story that in my opinion is ane of the most romantic I've ever seen on moving picture. It all comes together flawlessly.
